Charles Murray gives by far the best argument I’ve ever heard for getting rid of the SAT, acknowledging that the common arguments against it are weak at best.
“It could happen, and it should happen. There is poignance in calling for an end to a test conceived for such a noble purpose. But the SAT score, intended as a signal flare for those on the bottom, has become a badge flaunted by those on top. We pay a steep educational and cultural price for a test that no one really needs.“
Of course, I still can’t help but like it; perhaps even more after hearing his argument, because I did what I did without coming from any sort of socio-economic or cultural elite. In fact, I think I’ll soon be starting a series of posts about how I come from a family of rednecks… love ’em.
